Justice Surya Kant Appointed as India’s Next Chief Justice, to Assume Office on November 24, 2025
Following the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on November 23, the President has appointed Justice Surya Kant, the second senior Judge of the Supreme Court, to the position of Chief Justice of India.
New Delhi (India) October 30: The next Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, was appointed on Thursday, October 30, 2025. He will take control with effect from 24th November. He shall hold office for nearly 16 months until February 9, 2027.
His assumption of the office will take place with immediate effect after the Chief Justice he is to succeed, Justice Bhushan R Gavai, demits the office voluntarily of Chief Justice of India. This week, CJI Gavai wrote to the Union Government, proposing the name of Justice Surya Kant, as the next Chief Justice of India, the second senior Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
Appointment and Notification
The Union Law Ministry’s Department of Justice released a notification regarding the appointment of Chief Justice Surya Kant.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal wrote, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 24, 2025,” on X.

Surya Kant is attributed to the Indian state of Haryana who would for the first time become the Chief Justice of India. Early Life and Education in Haryana
Born on February 10, 1962, in Petwar, a small village in Hisar district of Haryana, Justice Kant spent his formative years in humble beginnings. He attended a local school where he and his classmates sat on the floor due to the lack of benches until Class VIII.
He earned his degree from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar in 1981 and his Bachelor’s degree in Law in 1984 thereafter started practising in the District Courts, Hisar.istrict Courts, Hisar.
Distinguished Legal Career and Key Roles
Justice Kant specialised in Constitutional, Service, and Civil Matters at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh, having moved there in 1985. Justice Kant was designated Senior Advocate and appointed as the Advocate General of Haryana on July 7, 2000. He was appointed a permanent Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004.
He was appointed as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018 and was further elevated as the Judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019. Since May 14, 2025, he has remained the Executive Chairman of NALSA, and he has also served in several Indian Law Institute committees.
