New Delhi (India) December 17: One of the shooters in the tragic event at the Hanukkah celebration, which led to the death of 15 people and happened last Sunday, was Sajid Akram (50), a native of Hyderabad. Though he relocated to Australia roughly 30 years ago, he still holds an Indian passport.

The perpetrator of the attack, Sajid Akram, was shot dead by the police on the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌spot.

On‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ the other hand, Naveed Akram, his son (24), who was said to be with him at the time of the assault, managed to escape the gunfire and is now receiving treatment at a hospital in police custody. The Australian police have classified the incident as a terror attack related to the Islamic State.

Sajid Akram: From Student Visa to Radicalized Attacker

According to the police, Sajid Akram came to Australia in 1998 on a student visa after completing his Bachelor of Commerce degree in Hyderabad with a view to finding a job in Australia.

During the time he was in Australia (around 27 years), Akram only had sporadic contact with his family members who were in Hyderabad.

After arriving in Australia, Akram married Venera Grosso and had two children, Naveed and a girl. The family moved permanently to Australia.

Family Ties Severed Years Ago in Hyderabad

The Telangana police and intelligence services tracked down the family of Naveed at Al Hasnath Colony in Toli Chowki, the family members include his brother, a doctor and his father.

According to the investigation, Akram's relationship with his extended family in Hyderabad broke down several years ago as a result of family conflicts, and it is believed that his relatives severed contact with him long before the attack. The police reported that Akram did not attend his father's funeral services after his death in 2017.

No Indian Links, Global Training Suspected

Officials from Telangana police have stated that there is no evidence to suggest that there was any operational or ideological link between Akram's alleged radicalisation and India. The police have stated that Sajid Akram had no previous issues with the Telangana Police before migrating.

Australia‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ officials think that the pair of a father and a son, a father and a son radicalisation, happened in Sydney, as Naveed was reportedly attending Arabic and religious classes in Sydney from 2019 to 2022.

The wired sources disclosed that the duo moved to the Philippines in November 2025 where they probably got military tactics training before coming back to Sydney.

Hanukkah Tragedy at Bondi Beach

The terrible shooting happened on Sunday at a Hanukkah event in Bondi Beach, an open space which is of great importance to the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Australians.

There were 15 fatalities from the shooting, which took place amidst families and community members who had come to participate in the event.

Police have recovered a vehicle belonging to the younger suspect and within the vehicle police reported that they found a number of improvised explosive devices along with two shotguns.
