Bondi Beach Horror: 12 Killed in Sydney Terror Attack at Jewish Hanukkah Event; Explosives Found
At least 12 individuals were killed during a mass shooting by two gunmen on Sunday (December 14, 2025) at a Jewish event at Bondi Beach in Sydney. The Australian government designated this incident as a "terrorist attack." The initial suspect of the two involved was fatally shot by police, and the second was apprehended.
New Delhi (India) December 14: Homicide detectives have identified the shooter who reportedly shot people dead at Bondi Beach, and are investigating one of Australia‘s most lethal attacks in recent years. Police were seen carrying a search warrant at Akram’s home in Bonnyrigg, in Sydney’s suburb of Bonnyrigg.
PM Albanese Condemns 'Dark Moment'; Police Hunt Links
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese shared his thoughts about the shooting and people injured in a statement.
“The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing. Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives.”
"At this dark moment for our nation, our police and security agencies are working to determine anyone associated with this outrage," he added.
Government Declares Bondi Shooting a Terrorist Attack
Currently, the Police Commissioner of NSW, Mal Lanyon, said 29 individuals are believed to have been treated for injuries sustained in the attack and 2 were police officers. The Government declared the Bondi Beach tragedy terrorist because it targeted a particular faith group and carried firearms.
Police have said that they continue to investigate, and several items have been discovered in surrounding areas of crime scene that are being evaluated by forensic officers, including a remote detonated explosive device recovered from one of the suspect’s vehicles.
Explosives, Rifles Seized; Intelligence Tracks Suspects
Emergency services were called to Campbell Parade around 6:45 PM after receiving reports of shots being fired.
The police reported that both gunmen had been neutralised and a rifle had been seized as part of the operation.
The police also were looking to see if a third gunman had participated in the shooting. Bomb-Disposal Units also were deployed and worked with several suspected IEDs in the area, he said.
Mike Burgess, a senior official with the Australian Intelligence reportedly said that one of the suspected attackers was known to law enforcement, but had not been classified as an immediate threat.
Heroic Bystander Tackles Gunman in Dramatic Videos
Video footage in the scene suggested that two black men appeared in dark clothes launching off at the shoreline, numerous beach walkers headed towards the water, and emergency sirens echoed in the area.
The fact that some other video on social media drew some interest followed the misunderstanding that a witness managed to knock one of the gunmen down. Such moments appeared in the videos as a man sprinted up and wrestled with the gunman, trying to hold him over the shoulder, holding him up for gun, and turning his rifle onto him and preventing further deaths. Another video posted by social media confirms that another shooter was firing from a walkway above the shoreline.
To mark Hanukkah, hundreds of people took part in gatherings at Bondi Beach called Chanukah by Sea, which honors the beginning of Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.
