Ahmedabad Plane Crash: DNA of 215 victims matched; investigation of the black box underway

New Delhi (India) June 20: 241 of the 242 persons on board the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash died. 215 victims of the Air India AI-171 plane crash were identified by DNA matching and the mortal remains of the 198 people who died were given to their families.

According to Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik, 222 people have been identified as victims of the Air India plane accident. GS Malik claims that eight people were identified without DNA matching and 214 people were identified using DNA samples.

Rakesh Joshi, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent said, "215 DNA samples have been matched, of which the mortal remains of 198 deceased have been handed over to their families...Of the 198 deceased, 149 are Indian nationals, seven Portuguese, 32 British and one Canadian.”

The Ministry of Civil Aviation announced that the federal agency looking into the Air India Boeing 787-8 tragedy in Ahmedabad will decide where the black box data will be decoded "after due assessment of all technical, safety, and security considerations."

The government's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is looking into the horrifying disaster.

The black box from the tragic Air India flight AI 171 is probably going to be sent to the US for data recovery because the fire severely damaged the recorder's external components. India lacks the necessary tools to recover data from severely damaged black boxes. According to the reports, the Flight Data Recorder will be forwarded to the National Safety Transport Board's laboratory in Washington for analysis.

Two days after the incident, the AAIB, which had been allotted three months to finish the investigation, had recovered the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. It is important to figure out the black box because it would offer an in-depth knowledge of the circumstances leading up to the crash.

According to an aviation expert, the proposed dual engine failure was a potential cause of the crash, but the precise cause will only be known once the black box has been decoded.

The tragic Air India tragedy happened on June 12 when a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner headed for London left Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The plane hit a BJ Medical College dorm complex shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
