Unmasking Duplicity: India Confronts Pakistan Over Masood Azhar

India has reiterated its demand for strong action against Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar. The call comes after reports surfaced that Azhar delivered a public speech in Bahawalpur. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described this as evidence of Pakistan's “duplicity” in dealing with terrorism.

Pakistan’s History of Denial

For years, Pakistan has denied Azhar’s presence on its soil. However, recent events contradict these claims. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasised that Pakistan must act decisively against Azhar, who is involved in multiple cross-border terror attacks targeting India. This demand is not new and it highlights the long-standing tension between the two nations over terrorism.

Masood Azhar’s Public Speech

Reports indicate that Azhar delivered his first public speech in over 20 years to Jaish-e-Mohammed members. Held at a complex near Bahawalpur, the speech marked 100 years since the fall of the Turkish Caliphate and promised renewed terror campaigns against India and Israel. This speech is significant, as it references contemporary global events, including the Gaza conflict.

The Bahawalpur Connection

Bahawalpur, where the speech is believed to have occurred, is home to the Umm-ul-Qura seminary, a sprawling 1,000-acre facility linked to JeM. This site is central to JeM's operations, with extensive administrative blocks and housing units. Azhar’s association with this location has been long suspected by intelligence agencies.

A History of Controversy

Masood Azhar's name first gained notoriety after his release during the 1999 Kandahar hijacking. Since then, he has been linked to several major terror attacks, including the 2001 Indian Parliament attack. While Pakistan placed him under “protective custody” in 2016, no concrete action has been taken to prosecute him.

Calls for Global Accountability

India’s demand for action resonates internationally, as Azhar remains a global terrorist designated by the United Nations. Countries like the US and France have consistently called on Pakistan to crack down on terror networks operating within its borders.

Pakistan's Double Standard

The MEA’s recent statements underscore the need for transparency and accountability. Pakistan’s double standards in addressing terrorism pose challenges not only for India but for global security. India's persistent calls for action reflect its commitment to countering terrorism through diplomatic channels.
