New Delhi (India) October 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi called BR Gavai, the Chief Justice of India. He was allegedly attacked during Supreme Court hearings today. PM Modi describes the attack as a "reprehensible act". He said that it angered many Indians in a social media post on X.

Modi said, “Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable.

I appreciated the calm displayed by Justice Gavai in the face of such a situation. It highlights his commitment to values of justice and strengthening the spirit of our Constitution.”

Sonia Gandhi calls incident an assault on Constitution

Sonia Gandhi is the chairperson of the Congress Party. She stated on Monday that the attack on Chief Justice of India BR Gavai was an attack on the Constitution.

Gandhi said, “No words are adequate to condemn the attack on the Honourable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court itself. It is an assault not just on him but on our Constitution as well."

Bar Council suspends lawyer, initiates disciplinary action

Advocate Rakesh Kishore was suspended by the Bar Council of India on Monday from practicing law in any court with immediate effect. This is for allegedly attempting to throw a shoe at Chief Justice B R Gavai during Supreme Court proceedings.

According to BCI chairperson and senior attorney Manan Kumar Mishra, the lawyer's actions were "prima facie inconsistent with the dignity of the court". He also went against the Advocates Act of 1961's rules of professional ethics.

The order said, “On the basis of prima facie material, it appears that at about 11.35 am on 6 October 2025, in Court No. 1 of the Supreme Court of India, you i.e. Advocate Rakesh Kishore, enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi, removed your sports shoes and attempted to hurl them towards the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India during ongoing proceedings, whereupon you were detained by security.”

According to the Council, disciplinary action will be conducted against him. He will receive a show-cause notice requesting an explanation within 15 days as to why no further action should be taken. The Delhi Bar Council has been given two days to notify all courts and tribunals, update Kishore's status, and guarantee compliance.

CJI's Calm and Composed Reaction

CJI Gavai seemed unaffected by the disturbance. He ordered court workers to ignore it. He also directed that Rakesh Kishore be released with a warning.

It happened at approximately 11.35 a.m. when the 71-year-old lawyer took out his shoes and attempted to throw them in the direction of the CJI.

Supreme Court security meeting held after incident

Senior Supreme Court sources claim that Gavai called a conference with the Secretary General, the Supreme Court security chief, and other important officials. This is to discuss the incident during the lunch break. The topic of discussion also included strong security measures to stop future disruptions of this kind.
