Cuttack Violence: Curfew, Internet Ban Imposed After Durga Puja Immersion Clashes Leave 25 Injured in Odisha

In Cuttack, Odisha, tensions have risen after violent clashes during an idol immersion parade during Durga Puja. The state government has implemented tough measures, such as a curfew and internet ban to restore peace.

New Delhi (India) October 6: On Sunday evening, the Odisha government banned internet connections. They have issued prohibitory orders in 13 police-station areas in Cuttack. It is after a Durga idol immersion procession left 25 people injured in new violence

Narasingha Bhola Confirms 60 Platoons Already Deployed

According to Additional Police Commissioner Narasingha Bhola, the magistrate has issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 BNSS. 

He said, “This order will be in effect from 10 pm Sunday until 10 am Monday (October 7). We will assess the situation further and take a decision accordingly. As of today, only emergency services are open. Government offices, schools, and colleges are operating, while hospitals, pharmacies, grocery stores, and petrol pumps remain open. All other commercial establishments are closed.”

Bhola added, “We have 60 platoons of state police forces already deployed, and today eight companies of paramilitary forces have arrived. Units such as the Rapid Action Force, BSF, CRPF, and Odisha Swift Action Force are deployed at key locations and junctions and are closely monitoring activities. We are identifying those responsible for the violence and will take action against them for damage caused to public and private property.”

Chief Minister Promises Free Treatment and Strict Action

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi ordered officials to give the injured free medical treatment. He promised tough punishment for those involved. Majhi also gave officials instructions to guarantee constant surveillance of sensitive places. 

The CM said, “Cuttack city is a unique example of brotherhood. However, for the last few days, due to some troublemakers, peace has been disturbed in the city and the life of the common people is being disrupted. The government is keeping an eye on such elements, and strict action will be taken as per law.”

Home Department Suspends Internet Under Telegraph Act Rules

The Odisha Home Department took a significant precaution by suspending all internet and data services in Cuttack city. It includes Facebook, Instagram, X, WhatsApp, and other platforms, from 7 p.m. on October 5 to 7 p.m. on October 6.

The decision was made as per Rule 2(1) of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency/Public Safety) Rules, 2017 and Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885. It was signed by Additional Chief Secretary Satyabrata Sahu.

According to police, a fight broke out between 1.30 and 2 in the morning near Haathi Pokhari in Dargah Bazaar. This is after residents protested loud music being played during the procession.

VHP Calls 12-Hour Strike, Demands Officials’ Transfer

On Monday, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) declared a 12-hour strike. They claimed that the government had "completely failed" to maintain law and order. The VHP called for the DCP and district collector to be transferred. They accuse the district administration of causing the disturbances.

There are currently ten security force companies in the city. To keep the peace, police and Rapid Action Force members held flag marches in dargah bazaar and mangalabag.
