U.S. Women’s Hockey Team Declines State of the Union Invitation After Olympic Gold Win

The USA Hockey team “sincerely appreciates the invitation” and “deeply appreciates the recognition of their extraordinary achievement,” a spokesperson for the team told CBS News on Monday. 

The team recently defeated Canada in a dramatic overtime victory at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, securing their third Olympic gold medal in women’s ice hockey.

Scheduling Conflicts After 2026 Winter Olympics

The statement said that the athletes were unable to come to the State of the Union address due to previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Winter Games. 

“Due to the timing and prior commitments, the athletes are unable to participate. They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment,” the spokesperson said.

U.S. Men’s Hockey Team Expected to Attend. President Trump also extended an invitation to the United States men’s national ice hockey team following their gold medal victory over Canada. 

 The president reportedly spoke with the men’s team via video call as they celebrated in the locker room after their win.

House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed that the men’s team plans to attend the State of the Union speech.

The team arrived in South Florida Monday to continue their post-Olympic celebrations.
