Abohar’s Kurta-Pajama King Shot Dead; Police Kill 2 Accused in Crossfire

Abohar (Punjab) [India], July 08: The heart of Abohar town, Bhagat Singh Chowk, woke up to shock on July 7. Sanjay Verma, the popular tailoring tycoon known as the ‘kurta-pajama king,’ was shot dead in his car outside his showroom. Around 10 am, three men on a bike came. They fired openly. Eyewitnesses have now shared that they heard multiple gunshots at the place. Four bullet shells were recovered from the spot. Verma was declared dead on the spot. The murder triggered fear among traders and grabbed attention across Punjab’s political space.

Crossfire Ends With Two Arrested Accused Dead

On Tuesday, police said two accused, Jaspreet and Ram Ratan, were killed in a crossfire near Pir Tibba, a jungle area outside Abohar. They had been arrested earlier through CCTV footage clues. While recovering weapons, other armed criminals opened fire, injuring a cop. In self-defence, police fired back. Both accused were caught in the crossfire and died. DIG Harmanbir Singh Gill shared this account with the press. As per police, the two had helped the killers escape after the shooting. The main accused, Shakti, has been identified, but the other two shooters are yet to be caught.

A Business That Stitched Power and Prestige

Sanjay Verma, along with his brother Jagat, started small as local tailors. Their name spread for the neat fitting of crisp kurta-pajamas. Leaders, businessmen, and even celebrities visited their shop for the kurta pajamas. In the 1990s, their shop became a landmark. Later their shop was upgraded. Wrestler Dalip Singh was the special guest at its opening. He is now known as The Great Khali. With years of hard work, their business turned into a grand showroom named “New Wear Well,” known across Fazilka. Their name became closely linked with culture, trust, and the kurta-pajama style of Punjab.

Gang Claim Sparks Extortion Angle Rumour

A gangster claimed responsibility on social media shortly after the murder. This raised fears that the murder might be linked to extortion. It is a crime trend growing in Punjab. But police believe it was only a tactic to create confusion. No confirmed link has been found yet. In a separate case days earlier, actor Tania’s father was attacked by gunmen in Moga. Police are now under pressure to act quickly and fairly, as high-profile violence is starting to worry ordinary families and shopkeepers across towns in Punjab.

Politics, Condolences, and a Blame Game Begins

The murder led to sharp political reactions. Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar, once Abohar’s MLA, called it a sign of growing lawlessness. He criticised the ruling AAP, suggesting that Delhi-based leaders had no idea how to handle Punjab’s issues. On the other side, AAP leader Aman Arora met Verma’s family and assured justice. He promised that none of the culprits would be spared. In a state already shaken by many such cases, this murder has made it clear — even a man who stitched for the powerful could not escape crime’s deadly reach.
