New Delhi (India) July 29: Australia successfully chased down the 171-run target to defeat the West Indies in the fifth and final Twenty20 International. With this victory, they accomplish a historic sweep of the home team. This happens for the first time in their cricket history.

Australia Becomes Second Team to Win T20I Series 5-0

Australia won every game in a five-match T20I series. Furthermore, it was only India defeating New Zealand away from home in 2020. This makes Australia the second major team to win a five-match series 5-0 in T20Is.

Captain Marsh Praises Team Effort and Teamwork

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said, “I didn’t expect 5-0 at the start of the series. But we played some great cricket. It was something we spoke about after the fourth game. We knew no Australian team had completed a clean sweep. We’ve had guys come in and play different roles for us.”

Australia won the toss and chose to bowl first for the fifth time in the series. Shimron Hetmyer maintains his excellent form by playing a half-century with 52 runs off 31 balls. This happened after the hosts were at 32/3 in the powerplay overs.

The West Indies continued to lose wickets at regular times. They scored 170 runs in the final over of the innings. Sherfne Rutherford scored 35 runs off 17 balls.

Australia's Dominant Performance

Australia's bowling attack put on another impressive show. All six of their bowlers took at least one wicket. Ben Dwarshuis was the most effective, with statistics of 3/41.

Australia's chase did not go as planned. Their top three players Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh were all out with just 25 runs scored.

But Tim David came out firing in the powerplay. He hit a four and four sixes. He scored 30 runs in just 12 balls. Mitchell Owen scored 37 runs in 17 balls. He hit three fours and three sixes.

Although the visitors continued to lose wickets, Australia consistently led the chase. They achieved the target in 17 overs to secure a historic away sweep of the West Indies.

Historic Tour Ends with 8 Straight Wins Across Formats

The victory gives the Australian men's team their first T20 series sweep in the West Indies. This follows a similar sweep in the three-test series. The team concluded the tour with a perfect 8-0 record.

Three outstanding performances were part of the series success: Tim David's 37-ball century in St. Kitts, an eight-wicket victory in Jamaica and a three-wicket victory in the opener. The series also included Andre Russell’s last international match.

Next month, Australia will play against South Africa in a Twenty20 series. The West Indies will play against Pakistan in a series of three Twenty20 matches and three One-Day Internationals.
