6th June 2023, Mumbai: An Air India flight bound for San Francisco from Delhi had to be diverted to Magadan in Russia on Tuesday due to an engine malfunction, according to a statement from the Tata Group-owned private carrier. Despite the issue, the flight, carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew members, safely landed at its new destination. Air India stated, “Air India flight AI173 of June 6, operating Delhi-San Francisco has developed a technical issue with one of its engines. The flight, carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew, was diverted and landed safely in Magadan airport in Russia.”

The airline reported that the aircraft is currently undergoing mandatory checks, and reassured that all necessary support is being provided to the passengers on the ground. Notably, the specific aircraft involved in the incident is a Boeing 777 with the registration number VT-ALH, which was operating the flight from India to the United States.

This particular Boeing 777 in Russia is one of the three Boeing 777s in Air India’s fleet.Air India is taking the necessary steps to address the engine glitch and ensure the safety and well-being of its passengers. The diversion to Magadan allowed for a safe landing and the opportunity to conduct essential inspections on the aircraft.
