Mizoram Woman Arrested for Trying to Sell Her 2 Children Due to Intense Poverty

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] March 20:A 25-year-old woman from Mizoram was taken into custody in Champhai on Wednesday for trying to sell her two young kids, apparently because she was poor and in trouble.

The older daughter was taken into the care of the Child Welfare Committee to keep her safe. The younger daughter is with her father at this time.

An officer said the woman, Lalsangpuii, used a mobile phone app to look for prospective buyers and then went up to a woman she thought might be interested in buying her six- and one-and-a-half-year-old children.

"The woman owned more than ₹50,000 to individuals because she had in the past not paid back debts." "She also had loan defaults with a private financial institution, but she was unable to figure out how much she still paid," he stated, requesting to keep silent.

The head of the Mizoram Child Welfare Committee (CWC) filed a FIR against her, charging her of trying to traffic people and violating the Juvenile Justice Act. This led to action by the Champhai Police."When she faced questions, she said it was an act of fear provoked by being very poor and having a lot of bills." "She said she didn't know what she was doing was against the law," a police officer  said.
