Moderate 5.4 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Andaman Sea; No Casualties Reported, Tremors Felt Across Islands

An earthquake rocked the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday afternoon. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred near the Andaman Sea and measured 5.4 on the Richter scale at a depth of 90 kms, around 12.06 pm.

New Delhi (India) November 9: A 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit the Andaman Sea on November 9, 2025, at 12:06 PM IST (05:36 GMT), as per National Centre for Seismology. The epicenter of the quake was at 12.49°N latitude and 93.83°E longitude, at a depth of 90 kilometers.

No Immediate Damage or Casualties

The tremor was felt in portions of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or extensive damage. Local officials are asking residents to stay calm and follow safety measures.

Seismologists say the area is frequented by an earthquake due to tectonic plates -- the Indo-Australian and Eurasian -- that are constantly grinding against each other. A 5.4 is on the low end of moderate earthquakes though, and also given that this one was so deep (90km), that could have been it dulled what you might feel at the surface.

Meanwhile, German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that the quake was of magnitude 6.07 on Richter scale.

Region’s Seismic Activity and Tectonic Setting

Aftershocks continue to be watched by officials and the public has been promised updates.

Although mild tremors were felt in this Andaman quake, the repeated vibration of slight quakes at various places reveals that sensitivity and readiness needs to be made more effective. Geologists are still examining the tectonic processes in these areas to improve forecasting and mitigating seismic risks.

So far, there are no reports of any loss to life or property. More information about the earthquake is expected.

Recent Seismic Events Across India

It is not the only tremor India has experienced in recent weeks. Last month, Assam and areas of northeastern India were jostled by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake. The tremor occurred at a depth of 5 km in Udalguri district and its epicenter was located at 26.7 latitude and 92.2 longitude, it said. Fear-stricken residents in Guwahati and its neighbouring areas ran out of their houses. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, but the tremors — which could be felt in neighboring Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh — served as a reminder of the region’s seismic susceptibility.
