A major decision of the Supreme Court has come out on the caste certificate case of Navneet Kaur Rana, independent MP from Amravati, Maharashtra. The court has given relief to Rana and approved his petition. At the same time, the court has also canceled the decision of the High Court to cancel the caste certificate. This time MP Navneet Kaur Rana will contest the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket.

The bench of Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Sanjay Karol has given its verdict in Navneet’s caste certificate case. The Supreme Court canceled the decision of the Bombay High Court, in which the Scheduled Caste (SC) certificate of Amravati MP Navneet Rana was canceled. Navneet had contested the elections as an independent candidate in 2019 and had won. But this time she will contest elections on a BJP ticket.

What is the whole matter?

On June 8, 2021, the Bombay High Court had rejected Navneet Rana’s caste certificate saying that Navneet had obtained the Mochi caste certificate fraudulently by using fake documents. The court had said that records showed that she belonged to the Sikh-Chamar caste. Besides, the High Court had also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on him. Navneet had challenged the High Court’s decision to cancel his caste certificate in the Supreme Court. After which the Supreme Court gave relief to Navneet.

What decision did the Supreme Court give?

The Supreme Court said that there is no flaw in the caste certificate of MP Navneet Rana. The Supreme Court said that the Scrutiny Committee had considered the certificate to be correct, yet the High Court had canceled his caste certificate, which is not correct. We cancel the decision of the High Court. Navneet is now going to contest on the BJP ticket, having contested as an independent in 2019. Navneet Rana had won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the seat of Amravati in Maharashtra which is reserved for Scheduled Castes.

What did the Court Say?

The Supreme Court said in its decision that there is no flaw in the caste certificate of Navneet Rana. The decision of the Scrutiny Committee was correct and the High Court should not have interfered in it. The scrutiny committee had accepted Navneet Rana’s caste certificate as correct and gave him a clean chit. Shiv Sena leader Anandrao Adsul had filed a complaint with the Mumbai District Caste Certificate Scrutiny Committee. The High Court had said that the order passed by the inquiry committee was completely distorted, thoughtless and contrary to the evidence on record.
