11th June 2023, Mumbai: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal made headlines on Sunday as he shared the stage with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, during the Ramlila Maidan rally organized by the AAP. The rally aimed to protest against the Centre’s ordinance, and Sibal, known for his vocal support for reforms within the Congress party, had left the party in 2022. Sibal addressed the gathering, expressing his belief that the time has come for people to unite and fight against the Modi government, which he claimed has failed to address the needs of the public.

During his speech, Sibal emphasized the importance of unity in defending the Constitution whenever it comes under attack. As an independent MP not affiliated with any particular party, he stated his intention to travel to various places and urge people to join the fight against the Modi government. Sibal criticized the prime minister, accusing him of being disconnected from the concerns of the common people and favoring the wealthy. He highlighted the suffering of the people and claimed that government departments have not effectively worked for their welfare.

Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, referred to the rally as a movement against dictatorship. He recalled the successful anti-corruption movement that began twelve years ago at the same venue, Ramlila Maidan, and expressed his confidence that the current movement would also achieve success in removing the “dictatorial government,” safeguarding democracy, and upholding the constitution. Kejriwal criticized the Modi government, alleging that it disregards the Supreme Court and behaves undemocratically. He claimed that the government’s ordinance goes against the court’s verdict, denying the elected government in Delhi the power to work for the people and signaling the onset of dictatorship in the capital.

The Aam Aadmi Party organized the mega rally at Delhi’s Ramlila ground to protest against the Centre’s ordinance concerning administrative services in the national capital. The ordinance, introduced by the Union government on May 19, aimed to establish rules for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) regarding transfer, posting, vigilance, and other incidental matters. The ordinance sought to amend the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, and circumvent the Supreme Court’s judgment in the Centre vs Delhi case.
