New Delhi (India) October 1: Late Tuesday, a strong 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook the central Philippines. It resulted in extensive damage, a lot of deaths and fear. The buildings also fell and power was lost in multiple locations.

At least 69 people have been killed and over 150 more have been injured. This is a result of the significant damage to houses, churches, and public facilities.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, "no action is required" and "there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake".

Initial Tsunami Warning Withdrawn After Assessment

The epicenter was only 5 kilometers below the surface. It was some 19 kilometers northeast of the coastal city of Bogo in Cebu province. The tsunami warning was first issued by the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. But it was canceled once it was determined that no unusual waves had been produced.

Historic Church and Public Buildings Collapse

According to the Cebu province government, a fast food restaurant in Bogo sustained significant damage. A school and commercial building in Bantayan also collapsed. The centuries-old Parish of Saint Peter the Apostle in Bantayan was also damaged by the strong earthquake. It collapsed as a result of the shocks.

A video that has been making the rounds online shows the lights flickering and the church shaking during the earthquake. The images then showed a portion of the building collapse and the people running away.

Governor Urges Calm

Pamela Baricuatro is the provincial governor of Cebu. The governor recommended citizens to "remain calm and move to open areas, stay alert for aftershocks and stay away from walls or structures that may collapse."

Families were reportedly stranded in several townships, such as Medellin and San Remigio. The buildings, including water systems and sports facilities were totally demolished. The humanitarian situation was made worse by the earthquake. The area was already suffering from a terrible storm that had left the area in shock.

Philippines’ Vulnerability on the Pacific Ring of Fire

The Philippines is situated atop the Pacific "Ring of Fire". It is one of the most seismically active places on Earth. It is the cause of the country's frequent and occasionally disastrous earthquakes.

The movement and collision of numerous major and minor plates has resulted in considerable tectonic activity in this area.

Strong and destructive earthquakes occur randomly. There is no technology to anticipate when or where they might hit. Most are too weak for humans to feel.
