A woman has been taken into custody by German police after a knife attack at Hamburg's major train station that injured 17.

New Delhi (India) May 24: German authorities have arrested a woman after a stabbing attack at Hamburg's central train station which injured at least 17 people. 

The stabbing incident took place on Friday night during the city's rush hour and left at least four victims with possible serious injuries.

The woman will remain in police custody and is expected to show up in court on Saturday.

A train was on one of the platforms when the incident took place, which is reachable by a busy main road between platforms 13 and 14.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said, "The news from Hamburg is shocking. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. My thanks go to all the emergency services on the ground for their rapid assistance," on a post on social media platform X.

Police spokesman Florian Abbenseth said,"We have no evidence so far that the woman may have had a political motive.” 

“Rather, we have information, based on which we now want to investigate, whether she may have been experiencing a psychological emergency.”

Police also wrote, "Based on the findings so far, we assume that she acted alone. Investigations into the background are in full swing,"on X.

Photos from the incident showed individuals being carried into ambulances and police closing access to the platforms at one end of the station.

Deutsche Bahn, the German operator announced that four of the station's platforms were closed and that some trains will be delayed or rescheduled.

According to Hamburg's fire department, a total of 17 individuals were injured, including four who had possible deadly injuries, six who had serious injuries, and seven who had minor injuries. However, police later increased the number to 18.

This week has seen two significant knife attacks in Germany.

A guy was accused of carrying out a knife attack outside a bar in Bielefeld, western Germany, on Sunday that left five people injured and was taken into custody by police on Monday.

Security has become the top priority after a number of violent attacks that shook Germany in recent months.
