Supreme Court Issues Notice to Cricketer Mohammed Shami on Estranged Wife Hasin Jahan’s Plea for Higher Maintenance
The supreme court on Friday issued notice to Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami on a plea filed by his estranged wife Hasin Jahan against a Calcutta high court’s order which had directed the player to pay ₹4 lakh per month for her maintenance, even as the bench observed that the amount appeared “quite reasonable”.
New Delhi (India) November 7: The Supreme Court of India on Friday issued a notice to ace India fast bowler Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government, following a petition filed by his estranged wife Hasin Jahan. Now, it is the request of Shami’s past wife to increase her monthly maintenance for herself and their kid.
High Court’s Earlier Order Under Challenge
In a court verdict on July 1, 2025, correspondent, Shami was directed by the Calcutta High Court to pay her monthly maintenance of Rs 1.5 lakh for herself and 2.5 lakh their daughter. Hasin Jahan, in a petition filed through counsel for revocation of the order, argued that the amount offered was “too less” considering Shami’s income and expenditure.
Previously, the trial court had ordered Shami to give ₹80,000 per month for his daughter's monthly maintenance and ₹50,000 to Jahan.
Court Questions Plea for More Maintenance
The Supreme Court had during the hearing also questioned the demand of Hasin Jahan and asked her if a sum of Rs 4 Lakh per month is not sufficient, saying that as awarded by the Calcutta High Court it is ‘quite handsome.’
The Bench said, “Why have you filed this? Isn’t ₹4 lakh per month quite handsome?”
The bench also issued notice to Shami and the West Bengal government on the plea and asked them to file their replies within four weeks. By comparison, the next such meeting is slated for December 2025.
Hasin Jahan Seeks Increase Based on Shami’s Income
Advocates Shobha Gupta and Sriram Parakatt for Jahan told the bench that income of Shami was more than the maintenance ordered by the court.
She says that his monthly expenditure is over र1.08 crore as per an affidavit filed by Shami in the high court. He has a net worth of about ₹500 crore, the petition said and added that the wife is unemployed ever since her marriage as she has no independent source to maintain herself to sustain life on a day-to-day basis and also maintain her child.
According to Jahan, Shami is also supposed to clear the previous dues (which comes up to more than 2.4 crore) of maintenance, which the cricketer has denied saying it was not such amount but a far lesser sum. The high court had asked him to pay arrears of rent in eight equal monthly instalments from September. The trial court had initially ordered maintenance in 2018 which was raised by the HC on the wife's plea.
Long-Running Legal Battle Since 2018
Incidentally, the court notices to Shami and the West Bengal government comes as the latest development in an ugly legal tussle between Hasin Jahan and Shami that has been on since 2018 after when the former accused him of domestic abuse, dowry harassment and cheating over a financial dispute.
