3 convicted to Death for Killing 24 Dalits in UP Village More than 40 Years Ago

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] March 18: On Tuesday, a special court in UP's Mainpuri district placed three people to death for their roles in the 1981 Dehuli slaughter, in which 24 Dalits were killed, including two children and two women.

In addition to the death cost, the court fined all inmates ₹50,000, government lawyer Rohit Shukla told PTI.

Around 4:30 p.m. on November 18, 1981, a group of 17 criminals dressed in khakis burst into Dehuli. They went after a Dalit family and murdered 24 people, including two babies, ages six months and two years.

The first report from the police named 17 people as suspects in crimes such as murder (302), attempted murder (307), and sex assault with murder (396).

Out of the total amount of accused, 14 died while the trials were still going on, and one was found to have fled the country.

The three men—Kaptan Singh (60), Rampal (60), and Ram Sevak (70)—were found responsible by special judge Indira Singh on March 12.

Laik Singh, a resident of the region, filed the FIR on November 19, 1981. After a whole investigation, the criminals, including gang leaders Santosh and Radhey, were arrested.

In reaction to the accident, Indira Gandhi, who was Prime Minister at the time, met with the families who had been hurt. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was leader of the opposition, went on a pad yatra from Dihuli to Sadupur in Firozabad to show his support for the families who had been hurt.
