Ahmedabad to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games, Marking India’s Grand Return to Global Sporting Stage After 20 Years
Ahmedabad has been declared host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, India’s return to the international arena as an international sporting event host since it hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
New Delhi (India) November 26: The Commonwealth Sports General Assembly officially accepted India’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games, in which 74 Commonwealth nations and territories ratified India‘s bid. In October 2022, the Commonwealth Sports Executive Board recommended Ahmedabad as the host city for CWG 2030.
India’s Scale, Youth, Ambition, and Sporting Passion Praised
Dr Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sports, said that the formal confirmation of Ahmedabad as the host city opens up a new, bright chapter for the Games.
"This is the start of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport. After a 'Games reset', we head to Glasgow 2026 in fantastic shape to welcome the 74 teams of the Commonwealth before setting our sights on Amdavad 2030 for a special Centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games," President of Commonwealth Sport said.
He added, "India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance, and I'm delighted to report strong interest from a range of nations to host the 2034 Games and beyond. We start our next century for the Commonwealth Games in good health."
Strong Global Interest for Future Commonwealth Games
PT Usha, President of The Commonwealth Games Association of India, thanked Commonwealth Sports for the trust shown to India in relation to hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
"We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate a hundred years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century. It will bring together Athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress," she said.
India’s Sporting Passion and Cultural Heritage
India's vision for hosting the Games in 2030 focused on Ahmedabad (Amdavad) as a modern and culturally rich city with capabilities to deliver a memorable Centenary edition; this vision built upon the foundation that will be established through the hosting of Glasgow 2026 and was designed to highlight the member nations' youth, ambition, and strong sporting culture.
The Commonwealth Games' One Hundredth Anniversary will include 15 to 17 disciplines. The Ahmedabad 2030 group will collaborate with Commonwealth Sport and the International Federation community in the creation of a dynamic and exciting sports program that resonates locally as well as globally.
Sports Line-Up: Mix of Classics and New Additions
Finalizing all disciplines for these anniversary Commonwealth Games will begin next month, with an announcement of the entire Centenary Games scheduled to take place next year.
The following sports are under consideration: Archery, Badminton, 3x3 (three by three) Basketball and 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball, Beach Volleyball, T20 (Twenty Twenty) Cricket, Cycling, Diving, Hockey, Judo, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Triathlon and Para Triathlon, and Wrestling. The host can also suggest up to two new or traditional sports for inclusion.
