New Delhi (India) May 21: The promotion of General Asim Munir, the Pakistan Army's Chief of Army Staff, to the rank of Field Marshal has been announced by the Pakistani government. After Field Marshal Ayub Khan, he is now the second Field Marshal of the Pakistan Army in its history.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan chaired a cabinet meeting where the decision was made.

In the Pakistani Army, the field marshal is the highest ranking officer in charge of the army's overall command, management, and control. The Field Marshal also serves as the president and prime minister of Pakistan's primary military advisor on all national security-related issues.

The Prime Minister’s Office said,"The Government of Pakistan has approved the promotion of Gen Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) to the rank of Field Marshal for ensuring the security of the country and defeating the enemy based on the high strategy and courageous leadership."

The rare five-star title was conferred to General Munir in recognition of his "exemplary courage and determination" in commanding the Pakistan Army against India and his ability to "coordinate the war strategy and efforts of the armed forces in a comprehensive manner."

The Pakistani government has also agreed to extend the tenure of Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, the head of the Pakistan Air Force, once his current term ends.

Social media users are mocking Asim Munir for "promoting himself," even though the Pakistani government has confirmed his promotion.

Users on X questioned his promotion, asking how someone who loses a war and has the country's air bases "bombed" can be promoted to such a position.

In reaction to the Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor, which was precise and destructive. Approximately 100 terrorists were killed when Indian operations destroyed nine terror launch sites, including important ones in Bahawalpur and Muridke. India's attacks were directed at terrorist organisations that the Pakistani deep-state has long supported and used against India, including Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

India responded with greater force to Pakistan's counter operation, which saw its drones and missiles neutralised rather than achieve strategic triumph.Even though Pakistan's Operation Sindoor retaliation failed, Munir's strategic importance has been highlighted. Several observers believe that this is an expression of Pakistan's strong military-political dynamics, in which the army has always had significant power.
