Brazilian Teen Dies from Injecting Butterfly into Veins in Viral Challenge

As per the New York Post, a Brazilian teenager died after injecting himself with butterfly remains, but not before spending a week in severe pain from an infection or allergic reaction.

After becoming ill, 14-year-old Davi Nunes Moreira spent seven days in a hospital in Vitoria de Conquista in terrible discomfort. The teenager admitted injecting a mixture of water and a dead butterfly into his leg.

Police are currently looking into whether the boy's death was caused by his role in a social media challenge.

As per a hospital expert, the teenager may have suffered an allergic reaction, infection, or embolism.  “We don’t know how he prepared this mixture or the size of the fragments he managed to inject into the body. There may have been air left inside, which could lead to an embolism,” he said.

He said that an embolism, or blockage of a blood vessel, can cause a sudden death.

The mystery of death

As per experts, the tragedy may have been caused by toxins in the butterfly mix that put him in septic shock and caused his body to shut down.

Police have not ruled out the idea that the child may have been a part of a risky social media trend that resulted in his untimely death, but they are still awaiting entirely post-mortem results to create a cause of death.

“The autopsy results will provide clarity on the cause of death. Our aim is to uncover the full truth of what happened," a Vitoria da Conquista Civil Police official stated.
