Mumbai under orange alert, Pune, Thane, Nashik on red alert as heavy rains cause floods, deaths, and transport chaos
Mumbai is under an extreme rainfall alert as Maharashtra continues to see heavy rainfall. Mumbai is under an orange alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Pune, Thane and Nashik are under a red alert.

New Delhi (India) August 21: Heavy rain is currently falling on Mumbai. It adversely impacts the condition of local trains and flights. Parts of Mumbai are severely waterlogged. It causes traffic to stop. Water buildup forces the closure of several subways. It makes them dangerous for use at the time. The safety of passengers is at stake as some subways, such as the Chunabhatti subway continue to run even under heavy rainfall.
Rainfall alert for Maharashtrian Districts
In the meantime, similar circumstances are occurring in red-alert cities like Thane, Pune, and Nashik. Residents had been troubled by persistent waterlogging. It happens particularly for those living in low-lying areas.
Six dead, five missing
The Maharashtra Disaster Management Department reports that five persons are still missing in Nanded district. At least six people have been killed in the last 24 hours. It is a result of flooding and severe rainfall in various Maharashtra districts.
Rescue teams in action
The government stations six SDRF teams and 18 NDRF throughout the state. According to sources, SDRF members save 293 lives in the Mukhed neighborhood of Nanded.
Mumbai reports one death and three injuries over the last 24 hours. Beed reports a single death. Five people are still missing and four people have died in the state.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis says that the rainfall situation is under control. He tells, “The overall rain situation in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra is pretty much under control, though some areas were still witnessing heavy rainfall.”
He also adds, "Water discharge from dams is being managed, and the government is in touch with neighbouring states to coordinate release as per our requests."
Exams and services delayed
Due to heavy rains in the city, the University of Mumbai also postponed all of the exams that were suppose to take place on Wednesday. The revised exam date has not yet been announced.
Rainfall also hampers the functioning of many local train services by severe waterlogging. Airlines such as IndiGo and SpiceJet warn passengers that weather conditions can affect flight operations.
Technical issues causes two packed monorails to become stranded in Mumbai on Tuesday night. More than 750 people were subsequently rescued. Local officials states that "overcrowding" is the main cause of the technological difficulties.
IMD issues advisory
Additionally, the IMD also announces advisories cautioning citizens and civic authorities. They say that heavy rains will likely continue to fall periodically in parts of Mumbai and the surrounding regions.
Rainfall activity is expected to decrease over Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra starting today. The state will face occasional heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over Mumbai and the north Konkan over the next three days.
