Centre Ends Turkish Firm's Airport Role Over Security Concerns

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 14: In a strong move for national security, the Indian government cancelled the security clearance of Celebi Airport Services India Pvt. Ltd, a Turkish company handling airport operations. The decision was taken by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and applied to all nine airports where Celebi worked, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Goa. The reason for this sudden step is linked to Turkey’s recent support to Pakistan, which has caused tension in India.

Celebi’s Big Role in Indian Airports

Celebi, a well-known airport ground service provider, was responsible for many important jobs like passenger services, flight handling, cargo work, and operating jet bridges. The company helped in nearly 58,000 flight operations across the country every year. In Delhi alone, it also managed cargo at the Delhi Cargo Terminal. With such a wide network and role in Indian airports, the cancellation of clearance shows the seriousness of India’s response.

Why Turkey’s Support to Pakistan Became a Problem

The situation became serious after Turkey stood by Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. India soon launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ in response to the attack. Turkey’s open support to Pakistan angered many in India, especially when national safety was already under threat. This led the authorities to believe that having a Turkish company handling sensitive airport duties was not right. The BCAS stated that the action was taken “in the interest of national security.”

Shiv Sena’s Strong Reaction at Mumbai Airport

The Shiv Sena party, especially its Eknath Shinde faction, protested strongly against Celebi in Mumbai. Their leader, Murji Patel, led the demonstration at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. He accused Turkey of using India’s money to help Pakistan. He also warned airport authorities to end contracts with Celebi or face a huge protest of 10,000 people. The protest reflected the deep anger and concern among political leaders and citizens.

A Look at Celebi’s Global Past and Future in India

Celebi started in Turkey and later expanded its operations to many countries, including India. It had earned contracts due to its global experience and professional services. But when national pride and security are at stake, such international ties come under question. The Indian government has now made it clear that no business can continue if it risks the country’s safety. What happens next for Celebi in India remains uncertain, but for now, India has chosen to protect its skies on its own terms.
