Dust Storm and Rain Surprise Delhi Amid Heatwave Woes

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] April 10: People in Delhi and NCR were sweating under the harsh sun for many days. But suddenly, the sky turned brown with dust on Thursday. A dust storm started blowing in the afternoon. Many had to rush indoors, shops closed shutters, and roads became hazy. In some places, tree branches even fell due to strong winds. This sudden change gave people both surprise and a small break from the heat.

Rain Brings Temporary Relief

After the dust storm, the sky became darker and rain followed. The light to moderate rain cooled down the hot roads. Children came out to enjoy the drizzle. Cars slowed down, and people on bikes rushed to find shelter. It felt like nature was showing two moods in one day – anger and kindness. Even if it lasted for a short while, people could breathe a little easier than before.

Weather Office Predictions

The Indian Meteorological Department said the sudden change was due to a Western Disturbance. This is a weather pattern that brings clouds, rain, and winds to North India. The department said more rain and thunderstorm may come on Friday too. Minimum temperatures are likely to fall slightly. Delhi might not get full relief from heat, but such showers bring some comfort, even if for a little while.

Delhi’s Rising Night Temperatures

Before this change, Delhi had its hottest April nights in three years. On Wednesday, the temperature didn’t drop below 25.6°C at night. That’s much higher than usual. On Thursday, it went up to 26°C. Earlier years like 2022 had seen this too. Hot nights are troubling, as people find it hard to sleep without coolers or fans. This increase shows how serious Delhi’s heat problem is becoming.

Pollution and Dust Add to Trouble

The dust storm made air pollution worse. The AQI touched 243 in the morning, which is considered ‘poor’. This is harmful for children and elders, especially those who have breathing issues. Delhi often faces such air problems, but dust storms make it worse quickly. With vehicles on the road and dust in the air, it becomes very hard to stay outside for long. People were seen wearing masks again – not for virus, but for dust.
