29th May 2023, Mumbai: In an unexpected move, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) shook the financial landscape by announcing the discontinuation of 2,000 denomination banknotes. The decision, attributed to the “Clean Note Policy,” caught many by surprise. By the end of March 2023, a mere 10.8% of the total currency in circulation consisted of 2,000 notes, according to the RBI. Interestingly, a significant 89% of the 2,000 rupee notes were printed prior to March 2017, when the central bank had already reduced production.
The historic decision to demonetize 500 and 1,000 rupee banknotes by the NDA-I government in November 2016 had paved the way for the Introduction of 2,000 rupee notes.
