4th June 2023,Mumbai: Several individuals from his homeland were offended by a recent statement made by Javed Sheikh, a Pakistani actor, during an interview. Javed Sheikh, known for his role as Shah Rukh Khan’s father in the 2001 film Om Shanti Om, revealed the amount he was paid for the role.

During an interview with Gloss Etc, Javed was asked about his experience working on the Farah Khan movie. The controversy surrounding his compensation arose after he was cast in the film. Javed recounted, “Their manager approached me and informed me that they needed to sign the contract.” I responded, “Yes, but what will you charge me?” I made a vow to not accept any payment. The reason is simple: playing Shah Rukh’s father in his biggest film to date is an immense honor for me. India has numerous talented actors, and any of them could have filled this role. However, it is a special honor for me that Shah Rukh and Farah Khan chose me. Therefore, due to my gratitude towards Farah and Shah Rukh, I will not accept any money.”

The manager was unsympathetic and stated that it went against regulations. After much deliberation, Javed replied, “Go and tell Shah Rukh I will accept just one rupee.” Finally, the film’s production team agreed on Javed’s compensation. “It was surprising when they sent me the first paycheck.”

According to Reviewit.pk, Javed faced some unfavorable feedback for his remarks. Many people believed that by not demanding payment for his work, he lacked self-respect. One person remarked, “This is what happens when you don’t value yourself. The guy didn’t even ask for payment for his services.” Another individual questioned, “Why do they put Indian actors on such a pedestal? He should have at least requested a minimal professional fee. Why present yourself as someone with no worth?” Someone else expressed, “OMG, this goes against showing them how inferior we are and how amazing you are in comparison. You should be paid for your efforts.” Another comment read, “Nobody works for free.”

A person raised a concern, stating, “And you just humiliated yourself in front of them, proving your lack of value.”

In addition to his role in Om Shanti Om, Javed also appeared in the films My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves and Namastey London, portraying the father of Upen Patel. When asked about the current political relations between Pakistan and India, Javed responded, “Our political ties with India have deteriorated, especially since the BJP came to power. I doubt Pakistani actors would work in Indian films again. Perhaps it would be better if a different political party took control.”
