Haveri Rape case: 7 Accused received a grand welcome with music and victory parade; arrested again

New Delhi (India) May 24: On Friday, four of the seven primary accused in a gang rape case who were released on bail were taken back into custody by the police after they marched around Akki Allur's streets in cars to celebrate the release.

The event happened on May 20. However, the police took action when the video clips went viral on social media and received outrage from the online users.

The names of the people who were arrested are Riyaz Savikeri, Shoib Mulla, Mohammad Sadiq Agasimani, and Samiulla Lalanavar. A search operation has been started by the police to find the other three accused.

Anshu Kumar Srivastava, the Haveri district police superintendent, informed the reporters that the accused have been charged with unlawful assembly and rash driving.

Srivastava said, “These individuals are listed in the rowdy sheet. Their public celebration constitutes a breach of bail conditions. A separate case has been registered based on the video evidence.”

The officer also said that seven people had history records against them and they had applied to the court to cancel the bail of the seven main accused people.

According to reports, the procession, which included a few two- and four-wheelers, went from Haveri Sub-Jail to Akki Alur town in the district. In the video recordings, the accused individuals who were released on bail displayed actions of victory while their supporters shouted slogans.

According to legal experts, the suspects' public behavior after their release from custody amounts to a violation of the terms of their conditional bail.

The case is related to a 26-year-old lady who was gang-raped on January 7 under the Hanagal police station's jurisdiction. Nineteen people had been taken into custody. Twelve of the accused were granted bail earlier while on May 20, 2025, the remaining seven were granted bail.

Before being granted bail by the additional district and sessions court on May 20, the suspects—Aftab Chandanakatti, Madar Saab Mandakki, Samiwulla Lalanavar, Mohammad Sadiq Agasimani, Shoib Mulla, Tausip Choti, and Riyaz Savikeri—who were charged with gang rape under Section 376D of the Indian Penal Code had been detained in Haveri sub-jail for 17 months.
