Heavy rain in Guwahati floods the city; schools closed and roads blocked

New Delhi(India) May 21: After a night of intense rain, Guwahati is experiencing significant flooding that is affecting daily life and flooding homes and roadways. Traffic was jammed around the city, schools were closed, and cars were left stranded on the roads.

Zoo Road, Nabin Nagar, Hatigaon, Ganeshguri, Gita Nagar, Maligaon, Hedayetpur, Guwahati Club, Ulubari, Lachit Nagar, Chandmari, and Panjabari were among the major areas of the city that were affected.

There were reports of people walking through knee-deep water in some parts of the city and chest-deep water in other places.

A number of educational institutions declared that they were closed because of the "flooded" campus and congested roads.

There were reports of power cuts in several locations, and hundreds of homes in the "smart" city were filled with rainwater.

According to the IMD, Assam will see unfavourable weather over the next two to three days, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall expected in many areas of the state.

The IMD said,"As per rainfall data recorded on May 20, 2025, several locations in and around Guwahati received substantial precipitation, including 112.5 mm at the Guwahati AWS station."

During their inspection of flooded areas, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah and Mayor Mrigen Sarania of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) observed problems caused by rains flowing from the Meghalaya highlands. According to the minister, Guwahati's artificial floods are a serious issue, and all relevant authorities have been working to solve the issue and make the city flood-free.

He said,"It is not like the works so far have not yielded any result. We succeeded to some extent. But Guwahati is an unplanned city with a bowl-shaped geography and therefore, we have to install water pump sets at various locations to drain out the logged water.”

Authorities are keeping a close eye on the situation and having rescue workers on standby.
