Indian Railways cancels 24 trains from December due to dense winter fog. Check affected routes, reasons, and passenger advice.
Mumbai(Maharashtra)[India] December 29: Have you ever planned a long train journey in winter days? And then heard bad news at the last moment? This happens every year. As winter starts, dense fog covers many parts of North India. Visibility drops sharply. Trains cannot run safely at normal speed. Indian Railways knows this pattern well. To avoid major accidents and long delays, some trains are cancelled in advance. From December to February, this step is taken almost every year. It helps reduce sudden chaos for passengers later.
East Central Railway Cancels 24 Pairs of Trains
This winter too, Indian Railways has announced cancellations. The East Central Railway has cancelled 24 pairs of trains. That means 48 individual train services. These cancellations started from 1st of December 2025. You must know that these will continue till early March 2026. The main reason is dense fog expected during winter months. Officials have clearly said this move is for safety. Passengers are advised to check their train status early. Alternate travel plans are also suggested for those travelling long distances.

Which Routes Are Most Affected This Season?
Several popular long distance routes are affected. Tata Amritsar Express and Hatia Anand Vihar Express are cancelled. Other trains like Santragachi Anand Vihar Express are on the list. Routes connecting Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Delhi, Punjab, and Assam face maximum impact. Trains running from Dibrugarh, Kamakhya, Purnia Court, and Malda Town are also cancelled for weeks. These routes usually pass through fog heavy regions. Railways cancel such trains to avoid running them at very slow speed for long hours.
Winter Fog and Railways Have a Long History
Fog related disruptions are not new in India. For decades, winter fog has troubled rail operations in North India. Before modern safety systems, delays used to stretch for 10 to 15 hours. Passengers suffered badly. Over time, Indian Railways improved signals and tracking systems. Still, fog remains a major challenge. Cancelling selected trains early has become a regular practice. This helps manage traffic better. It also ensures that running trains get priority and safer movement during low visibility conditions.
What Passengers Should Do Before Planning Travel
Passengers are advised to stay alert. Always check the latest train list before booking tickets. The cancelled trains will not run during the mentioned dates. Those holding tickets should look for alternate trains or request refunds through official channels. Railways suggest using official apps and websites for updates. Winter travel needs extra planning. Fog can also cause delays in running trains. Keeping buffer time is wise. Indian Railways says safety comes first, even if it means cancelling services for some months.
