EAM S Jaishankar Calls For Stronger Multilateralism At UNGA

Jaishankar urged increased international collaboration and called for steps to prevent conflicts, regulate emerging technologies and barriers to dominance and disruptions, and above all, to support the observance of international law, rules and norms.

Jaishankar Pushes Global Cooperation

S Jaishankar said on social media platform X that the summit provided an opportunity to highlight the importance of multilateralism when international cooperation was under significant strain amid heightened competition, geopolitics and conflicts.

He said, "We meet at a time when the global order is under stress. For some decades, the world has witnessed a steady rebalancing, which was a long-expected structural evolution. However, extreme competition, geopolitical tensions, and actual conflicts have given this an entirely different character. If left unchecked, it would call into question the very spirit of international cooperation. That is why it is so essential that multilateralism asserts itself strongly at this juncture.”

Albanese Backs UN Cooperation

Anthony Albanese, the Australian Prime Minister who announced that the country would run for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029-30 term, said no one can solve the global problems alone.

“When we look at the challenges confronting us: a land war in Europe, conflict in the Middle East, global inflation, the rise of new technologies, including artificial intelligence that present opportunities but also have very significant risks before us. To solve them, we must commit to the UN Charter, but we must also resolve to make the system work more effectively,” Albanese said.

India-EU Ties Discussed

Jaishankar also interacted with EU colleagues. Among the issues discussed were expanding India-EU cooperation, multilateral cooperation and major international developments, such as in the Gulf, Ukraine and Indo-Pacific region.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Mr. Andrii Sybiha, said on X that he was happy to meet with Minister Jaishankar to talk about peace initiatives, bilateral cooperation and global affairs. They discussed the developments in the Black Sea and their impact on the market, stated Minister Sybiha, adding that the free navigation is a critical factor for global food security. 

V4 Supports India's UN Bid

Four Central European nations in a Visegrad Group, a bloc called for India to get a permanent membership of the UN Security Council, with Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar claiming that India must be at the table at the highest decision-making forum of the world body.

"We all agree as V4 countries that India, as a part of the Global South country, an upcoming superpower in the Indo-Pacific region, must be at the table as the permanent member of the UN Security Council," Blanar said.

The bloc comprises Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
