Is Manipur on the Edge Again? What Triggered a 10-Day Shutdown This Time?

Imphal (Manipur) [India] June 08:  Asem Kanan, a member of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, was arrested at Imphal airport by the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch. He is accused of involvement in past violence in Manipur and was taken to Guwahati. His arrest brought back fears and anger among the people. Within hours, crowds gathered, roads were blocked, and the atmosphere turned tense. This one event disturbed the peace in many valley districts.

Violent Protests and Injured Youth Add Fuel to Fire

Soon after the arrest, hundreds came out on the streets. Roads in Imphal were blocked with burning tyres, wooden planks, and anything they could find. Tear gas, mock bombs, and live bullets were used to disperse people. In this chaos, a 13-year-old boy got seriously injured by a tear gas shell. His leg was hit badly, and he had to be rushed to the hospital. The public reaction kept growing stronger.

Arambai Tenggol Declares a 10-Day Statewide Shutdown

Reacting sharply, Arambai Tenggol called for a full 10-day shutdown across Manipur. They demanded the immediate release of all arrested members. Shops started shutting, vehicles stayed off roads, and fear spread. The shutdown affected regular life deeply, especially in Imphal and nearby places. People say they are tired of violence but also feel unheard. The group’s call made the government and locals face a new challenge.

Women’s Group Issues Ultimatum to MLAs

Amid the shutdown, a women’s group from Khurai raised their voice. They asked all MLAs staying outside Manipur to come back and form a new government by June 10, 6 PM. They clearly said – if anyone fails to return, they should never be allowed to re-enter the state. Their warning shows the public’s disappointment with leadership. People want solutions, not silence, in such a serious situation.

Security Tightened, But Tension Remains High

Security forces have been placed at key spots—Imphal East’s Palace Compound, Moirangkhom, Keishampat Bridge, and near the airport. More than 11 people were injured by Sunday evening. Locals say the fear from past violence has returned. Schools stayed shut, shops closed early, and families stayed indoors. The state government is trying to control the unrest, but people are watching closely. Trust in leadership feels weak, and peace seems far away.
