Kolkata Rape Case: TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee slammed for his insensitive remarks
There has been a lot of controversy and criticism over senior Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee's remarks regarding the rape of the law student in Kolkata.

New Delhi (India) June 28: The opposition and the general public in West Bengal are furious and critical of senior Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee's remarks regarding the rape of the law student in Kolkata. The Bharatiya Janta Party called the remarks "shameful" and "in favour of the rapists."
Kalyan Banerjee said, “If a friend rapes another friend, then how will the government authorities provide protection in such cases? Do you want to deploy police in educational institutions? Police cannot be in every corner” in a statement.
According to the Serampore senior MP, male coworkers should remain watchful and protect their female counterparts.
He added, “Some perverted persons are committing such crimes. Strong action should be taken against them. On the other hand, women should also stand against such crimes.”
Amit Malviya, a BJP spokesperson, posted the video of Mr. Banerjee and referred to it as "insensitive."
He said, “So rape by classmates is acceptable now? If this government claims it has no role in ensuring safety inside educational institutions, then what is the point of having a government at all?”
Three people have been taken into custody for the gang rape of a 24-year-old first-year law student within South Calcutta Law College. The accused includes two present students and a well-known student leader of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP).
According to senior Kolkata Police officials, a medical test verified the woman's claims and showed bite wounds, scratches and evidence of forceful penetration. Pramit Mukherjee, Zaib Ahmed and Monojit Mishra have been named as the accused.
In a police complaint, the law student claimed that she was filmed, "hit with a hockey stick," and blackmailed by the online release of the rape footage.
The main accused, Mishra is apparently a prominent figure at the college. There are a number of photos of Mishra with influential political figures that have also been circulated online. The opposition has already begun to react strongly to this. Many leaders have accused the government of Mamata Banerjee of being responsible for the incident.
On Friday, June 27, 2025, protests broke out all throughout Kolkata after the arrest of the three men. Political parties and students demonstrated in the streets to show support to the victim.
The horrible memories of the rape and murder of an intern at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August of last year were brought back by the incident that happened within the South Kolkata Law College.
