Ashwin shares honest thoughts on India's bowling choices in the first Test against England

Why Was Shardul Thakur Ignored for 40 Overs? Ashwin Questions Team Plan

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 28: In the first Test against England at Headingley, fans were shocked when Shardul Thakur did not bowl for the first 39 overs. Shubman Gill, who was in charge on the field, gave him the ball very late. His first spell of 3 overs gave away 23 runs without any breakthrough. By the time he returned for another spell, the English team had already gained strong control, raising questions about India’s bowling strategy.

Did India Forget His Match-Up with Root?

Ravichandran Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, said that Shardul Thakur should’ve been used when Joe Root was batting. In 2021, Shardul Thakur had dismissed Root twice. But instead of using this match-up, the team chose to hold him back. According to Ashwin, this delayed decision made his bowling look weak, but in reality, he was not given the right chance to make an impact when it mattered.

His Role Was Too Limited

Even in the second innings, Shardul Thakur was given only 10 overs. He came in early, in the 19th over, but was not used much later. While he did manage to take wickets of Ben Duckett and Harry Brook, it seemed like he was added just for the numbers. Ashwin pointed out that if Shardul Thakur’s job is to create impact, then he should be on the field more and not sit out during crucial moments.

Ashwin’s Honest Criticism

Ashwin clearly said that blaming Shardul Thakur for the team’s loss is unfair. He believes that a player needs the right time and situation to perform. He also said, “If this is how Thakur will be used, then what is the point of even having him in the team?” His strong words have sparked a fresh debate on how team India handles all-rounders like Shardul during tough matches.

Will He Be Dropped Next?

With the second Test approaching, there are talks of Kuldeep Yadav replacing Shardul Thakur. Since Jasprit Bumrah bowled 44 overs in the first match, there’s a chance he might not play the next. This could change the team combination again. Ashwin added that had India taken the lead in the first match, the next match would have been easier. Now, all eyes are on whether the team will fix these decisions in time.
