May 7 Mock Drills Across India: What You Must Know

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India ] May 6: The government has announced a nationwide mock drill on May 7. This is being done so that people and officials are better prepared in case of any sudden attack. After a recent incident in Pahalgam where 26 people lost their lives, the situation between India and Pakistan has become tense. History shows that Civil Defence in India started during World War II, and now it is once again being practised for safety and readiness.

Will Schools and Banks Be Closed?

There is no need to worry about daily life being disturbed. All schools, colleges, banks, and offices will remain open on May 7. The drill is planned in such a way that it happens smoothly without stopping normal work. In fact, students and office workers may become a part of the mock drill and learn what to do if there is ever an emergency. Just like a fire drill, this one is also for learning and practice.

What Happens During the Drill?

During the mock drill, sirens may be heard, and people may be asked to switch off lights for a few minutes. This is called a crash blackout, and it helps hide buildings during an air attack. People may also see police, volunteers, and students taking part in safety exercises. In the past, during wars, such blackouts were very common to protect cities from enemy bombings. This time too, it’s only to be better prepared, not because of any direct danger.

Who All Are Taking Part?

The drill is not only for the police or the army. It includes Civil Defence volunteers, NCC cadets, NSS members, and even regular people like students and local workers. These people are trained on what to do during a war-like situation. In many cities, people may see activities like cleaning bunkers or preparing trenches. Long ago, such things were done during war times. Now, the idea is to bring that old knowledge back in case it is ever needed again.

Will There Be Any Blackouts or Internet Issues?

Some areas may have short power cuts as part of the drill. But these are only for practice and will be informed in advance. There is no plan to shut down the internet or mobile network. People are requested to stay calm and follow any instructions given by the local officials. In places like Delhi and Mumbai, mock drills like this have happened before too. They are not meant to scare people, but to make everyone ready, just in case something happens.
