MoD Signs ₹2,867 Crore Deals to Enhance Navy's Submarine Capabilities

Delhi (India) December 30 : In a significant move to strengthen India's naval defense, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed two major contracts totaling ₹2,867 crore. These agreements aim to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Navy's submarines, particularly the Kalvari-Class, by combining advanced technologies such as Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) and Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo (EHWT) systems.

Contract with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL)

The first contract, valued at approximately ₹1,990 crore, was given to Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). This agreement focuses on constructing an AIP plug for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)-AIP system and combining it into regular submarines. The AIP system is crucial for enhancing underwater strength, allowing submarines to operate submerged for extended periods without surfacing.

Agreement with France's Naval Group

The second contract, worth ₹877 crore, was signed with France's Naval Group. This deal involves the addition of Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedoes (EHWT) to expand the firepower capabilities of the Kalvari-Class submarines. The addition of these advanced torpedoes is expected to significantly enhance the offensive capabilities of the Indian Navy's submarine unit.

Significance of the Agreements

These contracts are part of India's ongoing efforts to update its naval forces and improve underwater warfare capabilities. The addition of AIP systems and advanced torpedoes line up with the strategic objective of enhancing the Navy's working efficiency and maintaining a trustworthy limit in the region.

Conclusion

The MoD's recent agreements with MDL and Naval Group mark a significant step toward strengthening India's naval defense infrastructure. By incorporating advanced technologies like AIP systems and EHWTs, the Indian Navy is prepared to enhance its underwater combat capabilities, ensuring a robust and secure maritime presence.
