Modi Congratulates Sushila Karki as Nepal’s First Woman Interim PM After Days of Protests
Four days after KP Sharma Oli resigned from office due to anti-government protests, Sushila Karki becomes the first woman to take the oath of Nepal's temporary prime minister on Friday night.

Modi says it is a great example of women's empowerment as the country returns to normalcy after days of violent protests. The protests lead to a change of government. The prime minister also wishes Nepal's youth a prosperous future.
Modi Says Karki’s Role Shows Women’s Strength
Modi says, "Nepal is a friend of India, a close friend. Today, on behalf of 140 crore Indians, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Smt. Sushila ji on assuming charge as the Prime Minister of the interim government in Nepal. Sushila ji's taking oath as the first woman Prime Minister of Nepal is a very good example of women's empowerment.”
PM Modi congratulates Karki on her appointment as the prime minister of Nepal. He repeats India's support for the peace and prosperity of the nation for the second time in a single day.
He says, “On assuming office as interim Prime Minister of Nepal, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Hon’ble Mrs Sushila Karki. India remains fully committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of our brothers and sisters in Nepal," in a post on social media platform X.
PM Modi also praises the Nepali people's determination. He points out that despite political tensions, the nepali youth is volunteering to clean and paint buildings.
He says, "I also want to congratulate the people of Nepal who, despite such turbulent times, have kept democratic values supreme."
India Promises Support for Nepal’s Peace and Growth
The External Affairs Ministry of India releases a formal statement on the most recent events in Nepal. The ministry states that India welcomes the establishment of a new temporary government led by Sushila Karki.
The official statement says, “We welcome the formation of a new Interim Government in Nepal, led by Right Honourable Mrs Sushila Karki. We are hopeful that this would help in fostering peace and stability."
Karki's strong stand against corruption
Karki is the former Chief Justice of Nepal. She took the oath of office on Friday evening and was formally sworn in as the country's interim prime minister. She is the first woman to serve as the prime minister of Nepal. It happens four days after former prime minister KP Sharma Oli resigned. This is because of huge anti-corruption protests against his administration.
The 73-year-old leader from Nepal is well-known for her strength and honesty. Karki is well-known for standing firmly against corruption during her time as Chief Justice from 2016 to 2017.
Youth Protests Bring Major Change in Nepal
The most violent demonstrations occurred in Nepal earlier this week. The Gen Z demonstrators went to the streets nationwide to call for the resignation of the Oli government. This is due to significant corruption and a social media ban. The violence claimed the lives of almost fifty people.
