Monsoon Session Begins: Govt and Opposition Brace for Intense Parliament Showdown
The Centre and the opposition are anticipated to engage in a high-stakes political confrontation as the Monsoon Session of Parliament starts today.

New Delhi (India) July 21: The opposition is preparing to attack the government on a wide range of controversial topics.
Opposition targets PM over key issues
The topics start from US President Trump's claims of mediating a ceasefire with Pakistan and alleged lapses in the deadly Pahalgam attack to the revision of the Bihar voter list and the Air India crash that claimed 260 lives.
The Monsoon session of Parliament is expected to be highly dramatic. It is the first session since Operation Sindoor.
The session will include the government's move to move forward with 17 bills, including a rejection of Congress's demand to restore J&K sovereignty.
PM Modi will begin by announcing the Center's priorities in considering increasing demand to address both internal and global issues.
According to Minister Kiren Rijiju, the Union administration is willing to talk about any topic in Parliament, including Operation Sindoor. However, he stated that any discussion on the topic has to conform to the established guidelines and protocols.
According to PM Modi, the ongoing monsoon season is a sign of creativity and new beginnings. It is vital for strengthening India's rural economy and agriculture.
He said, “Monsoon is a symbol of innovation and new creation. According to reports so far, the season is progressing well across the country. It is expected to be favourable for agriculture.”
VP calls for respectful debates
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar encourages political parties to maintain mutual respect. He asks for guaranteed meaningful debate by avoiding bitterness and disparaging remarks.
He said, "I appeal to everyone in the political spectrum: please have mutual respect. Please don't trade unbecoming language on television or otherwise against the leadership of one party or the other. This culture is not the essence of our civilization."
The Central government’s plan for the monsoon session includes important bills such as the Income Tax Bill, Jan Vishwas Bill, IIM Bill and reforms on tax laws, mineral exploration and sports governance. It also includes a resolution to extend the President's Rule in Manipur.
Congress demands Modi's presence
The Congress insists that PM Modi attends the House when the discussion of Trump's ceasefire claims, Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack begins.
According to Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh, the prime minister "owes it to the country". It is important for Modi to take part in the discussion because it involves sensitive foreign policy issues and serious internal security failings.
He said, "Very shortly, the nattily dressed Prime Minister will give his usual Desh ke Naam Sandesh through the media outside the Parliament Building before the commencement of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. This will be full of his usual platitudes and hypocrisy" in a post on social media platform X.
On Monday, Congress MP Randeep Surjewala filed a Suspension of Business Notice in the Rajya Sabha under Rule 267. He requests a debate on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack. In order to address urgent matters of national concern, members are permitted by Rule 267 to stop regular procedures.
The meeting will end on August 21. However, both Houses will adjourn on August 12 in order to reassemble on August 18, 2025. This is done in order to back Independence Day celebrations. The session will take place over 32 days and consist of 21 sittings in total.
