Can Power Feed Anger? Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad’s Slap in Mumbai Sparks Outrage

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 09: A canteen staffer at Mumbai’s Akashvani MLA hostel was slapped by Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad. The MLA claimed he was served stale dal and rice and rushed downstairs in anger. A viral video shows him shouting and refusing to pay. As per reports, he finally slapped the staffer at the billing counter, as seen in video. The incident led to widespread public outrage. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis later addressed the issue in the Assembly, saying such behaviour “does not send the right message” and that assault by a public representative was unacceptable and should be taken seriously.

“No Regret,” Says Sanjay Gaikwad as Criticism Grows

Even after the backlash, Sanjay Gaikwad showed no remorse. Speaking to PTI, he said, “If someone does not understand democratic language, then I have to use this one.” He added that he had earlier complained about food quality and would raise this again in the session. His strong words drew anger from both opposition and public voices. Critics questioned whether holding power meant bypassing legal complaint processes. While food quality should never be ignored, many said Gaikwad’s way of handling it made the issue about pride, not justice.

CM Fadnavis Condemns Action of Sanjay Gaikwad in Assembly

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took the matter seriously and raised it in the House. He said that such behaviour harms the dignity of the state legislature. Fadnavis added that there might be a problem with the hostel canteen. He said, it should have been handled through a proper complaint. "Assault does not suit a lawmaker,” he said. He urged the Speaker and Council Chairman to look into the matter, especially if there are problems with accommodation or food services. But he stressed violence cannot be the first step.

Opposition Leaders Demand Action against Sanjay Gaikwad

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi and Congress MLA Dr Jyoti Eknath Gaikwad both strongly criticised the MLA. They said he had every right to complain about poor food but not to hit someone. Priyanka called it “shameful,” especially since the victim was just doing his job. Dr Jyoti reminded that public representatives are supposed to set examples. “If they behave like this, what will the common man do?” she asked. They demanded a clear and fair investigation and said respect for service staff should always come first.

Blurred Lines Between Authority and Arrogance

The incident has sparked a fresh debate on how power is used in public spaces after this incident. Many social media users said this is not the first time an elected leader has misbehaved with support staff. The public is now asking whether enough action is taken in such cases. Political leaders enjoy many facilities, but when complaints arise, is violence the only answer? Citizens and officials alike now look at the Speaker and the government to take fair and visible steps so that such incidents do not repeat in the future.
