MS Dhoni may reject BCCI mentorship offer due to Gambhir’s role as head coach amid past differences

New Delhi (India) August 31: The former captain MS Dhoni has reportedly been offered a mentorship position in all formats by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He is not expected to assume the position till Gautam Gambhir is in charge as the head coach of all three forms.

The 44-year-old Dhoni has been breaking age restrictions to play for CSK. He has never assumed any high-level coaching duties. There are frequent speculations that he may join the team as a mentor.

Dhoni’s mentorship offer under BCCI’s radar

According to sources, the board thinks Dhoni might have an impact on the women's and youth cricket teams. It will be part of its "broad" responsibility in developing the nation's future cricketers. After his brief time as captain during the 2021 T20 World Cup, the former captain was reportedly offered the post. The BCCI is now making another attempt to sign the Ranchi star.

Clash of views with Gambhir

However, the sources also state that because of their "history of differences dating back to their playing days," Dhoni wanted to avoid any overlapping responsibilities with Gambhir. Dhoni is reportedly concentrating more on getting ready for what may be his final season with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Dhoni is the only Indian captain to have won the T20 World Cup in 2007, the World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013. He still plays for CSK in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He announced his retirement from international cricket in August 2020.

Dhoni has avoided involvement in BCCI affairs since his retirement. He maintains a low profile and is rarely spotted outside of high-profile weddings and events.

Manoj Tiwary’s take on Dhoni’s silence

Manoj Tiwary, a former batsman for India, responded to these rumors by mocking the 2011 World Cup-winning captain. He inquires as to whether Dhoni "picked up the phone" because contact with him is challenging.

He says, "Only time will tell. He has been given the offer. Woh phone uthaye hain na?(Did he pick up the phone?) Because it is difficult to reach him on the phone. Replies to messages from him are also very rare; many players have said this. Will he read the message or not? We don’t know."

Conflict of Interest is another factor that would cause Dhoni to think. It is anticipated that Dhoni will continue to play for CSK in the upcoming season. The former cricket player would prefer to avoid any conflicts of interest that might arise if Dhoni were to accept the position of BCCI.

It should be noted that Dhoni and Gambhir's relationship has been discussed on social media for years. Gambhir scored 97 and Dhoni remained undefeated at 91 during their memorable fourth-wicket partnership in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium.
