New UPI Rules Effective August 1: Daily Limits, Scheduled Payments & Auto Balance Feature Rolled Out
The new UPI regulations went into force on August 1, 2025. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) implements these changes, which are applicable to all customers on Paytm, Google Pay, and PhonePe.

New Delhi (India) August 1: The new UPI regulations went into force on August 1, 2025. All users of systems like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm are affected by the changes.
They are implemented by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The goal is to lessen the strain on the backend systems and enhance the overall UPI payment experience. This is done particularly during periods of high usage. Even though the changes might not seem like much, they could have a big influence on how consumers handle their everyday transactions.
Daily Balance Check Limited to 50 Times
The restriction on using UPI apps to monitor bank account balances is among the most significant changes. Users had the option to check their balance as often as they desired up until this point. However, a daily limit of 50 balance checks has been established. The goal of this action is to reduce the strain on the Application Programming Interface (API). The frequent balance checks were causing system slowdown.
Account Access Attempts Capped at 25
Additionally, a user's ability to retrieve data relating to their connected bank accounts is limited. Now, this can only happen 25 times a day. The total number of attempts will be limited, regardless of whether you are attempting to update your account or reconnect it to your device.
The NPCI also launches a new feature. The available account balance will now be displayed automatically after each UPI transaction. People may be able to manage their finances with this minor addition rather than constantly checking their balance by hand.
Auto-Debit Payments Set for Off-Peak Hours
The scheduled or auto-debit bill payments are another significant shift. All such payments, including your electricity bill, OTT subscription, and other recurring payments, will now only be handled during set hours. These are planned for off-peak times, such as before ten o'clock in the morning or after nine thirty at night. During the day, when most individuals are actively using UPI for other transactions. This regulation is intended to lessen system stress.
Only 3 Tries to Check Pending Transaction Status
Verifying the status of pending transactions is the emphasis of the last update. You can now only check the status of your UPI payment three times, with a 90-second pause between each attempt, if it is stuck or still being processed. This action has been taken to cut down on repetitive server requests that can cause everyone's performance to lag.
The NPCI's larger strategy to improve the stability and effectiveness of the UPI ecosystem includes these additional regulations. Those who use UPI frequently will need to be more aware of these limitations even though most users would not notice an impact right away.
