Pakistan's Shelling Hits Religious Sites in Poonch

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] May 09: On 7th May, early morning, a shell from Pakistan landed near Christ School in Poonch. This shell hit the home of two students, leading to their untimely death and causing serious injuries to their parents. The school, run by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, was closed at that time. Had it been open, the loss could have been even more devastating. This incident has deeply saddened the local community.

Convent and Gurudwara Also Affected

Another shell struck a Christian convent belonging to the Mother of Carmel congregation, damaging water tanks and destroying solar panels. In a separate incident, a gurdwara in Poonch was targeted, resulting in the death of three individuals. These attacks on places of worship have shocked the nation.

Foreign Secretary Condemns the Attacks

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri condemned these actions, stating that Pakistan targeted places of worship with a specific intent. He described this as a new low for the country. Misri highlighted that such attacks are not only against India but against humanity and the sanctity of religious places.

Historical Context of Poonch

Poonch has witnessed conflicts in the past, but residents say the recent shelling is among the worst. The town, known for its communal harmony, is now grappling with fear and uncertainty. Elders recall that even during the 1971 war, such direct attacks on religious sites were rare.

Calls for Peace and Restraint

The Indian government has urged Pakistan to cease targeting civilian areas and respect international norms. India maintains that its military actions are in response to terrorist threats and not aimed at civilians. The international community has also called for de-escalation and dialogue between the two nations to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
