Karna’s Friendship With Duryodhana: A Critical Closer Look

Singh explains that Kripacharya already knew who Karna was. According to him, Kripacharya’s question was not simply about Karna’s birth or caste. Karna had already demonstrated his skills, but he then wanted a deadly duel with Arjuna at a place meant for displaying skills.

Singh notes that Karna's behavior is in itself meaningful. Kripacharya's question was immediately preceded by Duryodhana declaring Karna as king of Anga. Importantly, none of the elders voiced an objection in making Karna a king. Singh reiterates that a considerable part of this story goes missing in a presentation focused solely on caste discrimination.

The Partnership of Karna and Duryodhana

Singh discusses the widely accepted belief of Karna bEeing an epitome of friendship. He asserts that Karna and Duryodhana knew each other since they were children and became friends later on.

As per Singh, their relationship was anchored mainly on their egoistic nature. It was their nature to reinforce the pride in each other rather than guiding each other to better decisions.

Singh supports his statement by quoting a description in the Mahabharata outlining a good friend. A good friend is identified as one who ought to dissuade conflict between brothers and counsel a friend in distress of a wrong decision.

Did Karna Ever Discourage Duryodhana?

Singh questions if there is any record of Karna having advised Duryodhana against his erroneous behavior. As supported by his assertion, Karna always backs up Duryodhana instead of helping him make correct decisions.

He believes Karna always affirmed support for Duryodhana and his wrong decisions. Singh believes this was different from the role of a true friend, who should sometimes disagree with a friend and give honest advice.

Karna's participation in the War

Singh challenges the portrayal of Karna as an unbeatable warrior. He highlights multiple incidents wherein Karna was beaten up several times by warriors such as Satyaki, Abhimanyu and Bhima.

He specifically gives the example of Karna being struck down multiple times by Bhima in a day, whereby Karna taunted Bhima but avoided a direct duel after being requested. Singh notes how such examples portray a different Karna compared to the widely accepted definition of brave in popular imagination.
