Shocking Crime at Swargate: 26-Year-Old Raped in Public Bus, Protests Erupt

India(26 February, 2025): A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a parked Shiv Shahi AC bus at the Swargate bus stop in Pune. The horrifying incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, raising serious questions about women’s safety in public spaces. The accused, identified as 36-year-old Dattatraya Gade, reportedly lured the woman by misleading her about the location of her bus. Taking advantage of the empty vehicle, he assaulted her and then fled the scene.

Public Outrage and Protesters’ Response

The incident sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests at the Swargate bus stop. Led by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Vasant More, demonstrators vandalised the security office, breaking window panes and damaging furniture. Women activists also raised slogans against the BJP-led Maharashtra government, holding them responsible for the increasing crimes against women in the state.

Security Lapses Exposed

The most shocking aspect of the case was that the crime occurred near a security cabin. Protesters questioned how such an incident could happen under the watch of security personnel. “If a woman is raped in front of a security cabin, then no one has the right to sit there,” said Vasant More, justifying the attack on the security office.

Police and Government Under Fire

Opposition leaders have slammed the Devendra Fadnavis-led government over the rise in crimes against women. NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule pointed out that Swargate is a high-security area with regular police patrols. Yet, such a crime took place, highlighting the failure of the home department. She demanded that the case be heard in a fast-track court and that the accused receive the strictest punishment.

Manhunt for the Accused

The police have launched a massive manhunt for Dattatraya Gade, who already has a criminal record, including theft and chain snatching cases. Eight police teams have been deployed to track him down. Authorities are also investigating whether there were lapses in security that allowed him to commit such a heinous crime without immediate detection.

History of Crimes in Public Transport

Unfortunately, this is not the first time public transport has become a crime scene. Over the years, several incidents of harassment and assault have been reported in buses and railway stations. Despite numerous policies and safety measures, women continue to feel unsafe in public places, especially during odd hours.

Need for Stronger Action and Safer Public Spaces

This tragic incident has reignited discussions on making public spaces safer for women. Protesters and activists are demanding better security at bus stops, CCTV surveillance inside all buses, and stricter laws to ensure quick justice for victims. Many argue that authorities must not wait for another tragedy before taking concrete steps.
