New Delhi (India) July 15: Fauja Singh is no more. He was a veteran marathon runner. He got hit by an unidentified car on Monday. Singh was taking a stroll in his hometown village in the Jalandhar district of Punjab when the incident happened. He was 114 years old.

Author Khushwant Singh confirmed his death after speaking with Fauja Singh's relatives.

The experienced runner was sent to a private hospital in Jalandhar, where he passed away from his wounds. Khushwant Singh is the author of the biography of Fauja Singh, The Turbaned Tornado.

Leaders Pay Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to the family of the veteran marathon runner. He also expressed his sorrow over Singh’s passing.

Modi posted, “Fauja Singh Ji was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness. He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world.”

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria also posted, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner and symbol of resilience. At 114, he joined me in the 'Nasha Mukt, Rangla Punjab' march with unmatched spirit. His legacy will continue to inspire a drug-free Punjab. Om Shanti Om" on X.

Former Punjab chief minister and BJP leader Captain Amarinder Singh also posted, “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner, at the age of 114 in a tragic road accident. His extraordinary life and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire generations.”

Police Investigating the Incident

According to Adampur Police Station SHO Hardeep Singh, Fauja Singh's son notified the authorities after the incident. Teams of investigators arrived at the scene.

He said, "As of now, the car that hit Fauja Singh has not been traced. We are investigating the matter, and an FIR has been registered. We will trace the case soon and arrest the accused."

Fauja Singh's remains are currently being held at a mortuary. They are being kept until his children arrive from abroad. Only after they arrive will his final rituals be carried out.

In 2000, Fauja Singh participated in his maiden race, the London Marathon. In his village, he was famous for running "from one place to another." 

Fauja Singh participated in nine marathons. Each marathon lasted 26 miles in New York, Toronto and London. He recorded five hours, forty minutes, and four seconds in Toronto. This was his best time.

He carried the torch during the London Olympics in 2012 and the Athens Games in 2004.
