26th September 2023, Mumbai: The diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have taken a new turn, with both countries issuing travel advisories for their citizens and halting visa services. This escalation in the diplomatic row stems from the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Canada on social media

Canada, in a move to protect its citizens in India, has updated its travel advisory, urging them to “remain vigilant and exercise caution.” This decision comes as a response to recent developments and the emergence of calls for protests and negative sentiment toward Canada on social media. In turn, India issued a similar advisory for Indian nationals and students residing in Canada. The advisory recommended that individuals exercise “utmost caution” due to rising anti-India activities and “politically-condoned” hate crimes in Canada. This growing tension could potentially lead to a major confrontation if not addressed diplomatically.

Canadian government rejected India’s travel advisory

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi expressed concerns about “threats” targeting Indian diplomats and sections of the Indian community that oppose the “anti-India agenda.” As a precaution, Indian nationals were advised to avoid traveling to regions and venues in Canada that have witnessed such incidents. However, the Canadian government rejected India’s travel advisory, asserting that Canada is one of the safest countries in the world. The ongoing dispute reflects the complexity of the situation and the exchange of allegations between the two nations.

 Nijjar’s killing on Canadian soil.

Tensions reached a boiling point after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar’s killing on Canadian soil. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), had been designated as a terrorist by India in 2020. In response, the Indian government firmly rejected these allegations, deeming them “absurd” and “motivated.” The situation escalated further with the revelation that the United States had provided intelligence to Canada regarding Nijjar’s killing.

The diplomatic complexities

According to reports, communications intercepted by Ottawa were more definitive, leading Canada to accuse India of orchestrating the plot. This development raised concerns, especially after the top US diplomat in Canada confirmed that there was “shared intelligence among Five Eyes partners.” The diplomatic complexities surrounding this case continue to evolve, and both India and Canada are navigating uncharted waters. The situation underscores the importance of diplomacy and cooperation in addressing sensitive matters between nations.

For travelers, staying informed about developments and adhering to travel advisories issued by their respective governments is essential. International relations can impact the safety and security of citizens abroad, making vigilance and caution prudent when traveling during diplomatic disputes.
