Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] March 22: Police said on Friday that an assistant professor at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar in Assam had sexually harassed and mistreated a female student in the Cachar district. The professor was captured.
This happened just hours after the professor, D Koteswara Raju, had been dismissed by NIT Silchar because of the claim. The student filed a complaint with the institute the day prior to, saying that the professor harassed her when he called her to his office after class to talk about her bad results.
He asked me for an explanation why I got the grades I did, and then he touched me. The student added in her handwriting note, "He told me to feel relaxed and that my grades would be fine if I did what he said."
"Touch my lower legs and touched me from behind."
She stated the teacher touched her on the lips, legs, belly, and neck. "He asked me to sit down with him, then seized me behind, and we talked about my body parts." "A friend called me at that time, and I run out of that room," she claimed.
The allegations provoked protests, and students wanted Raju to be hit off school. The protests stopped when the officials said the professor would be dismissed.
It was also said by the students that the professor was an ongoing offender and that this was the second formal complaint against him.
Raju was taken into custody by police after he got suspended and questioned in depth at the Ghungoor Police Outpost. After that, he was arrested and taken to the Silchar Sadar Police Station on Friday night, says Numal Mahatta, Superintendent of Police for Cachar.
A representative for NIT Silchar said, "The matter was immediately sent to the institute's internal complaints committee to checked into." The room where the claimed incident took place has been locked up.
From 2018, the assistant professor has been teaching at the school. After a student accused him sexual harassment in 2021, he was found not guilty because there wasn't enough proof & his accuser wasn't present during the hearing.
The Sexual Harassment of Women at Office (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act also gave the NIT's Internal charge Committee the power to look into the new charge.
