Air India Plane Crashes into Intern Doctors' Hostel of BJ Medical College Near Ahmedabad Airport

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 12: The Air India flight AI171, carrying 242 people, took off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 PM. But within five minutes, it lost connection after a desperate MAYDAY call and crashed into a residential area. Sadly, a large part of the aircraft fell directly onto the intern doctors' hostel of BJ Medical College. The peaceful afternoon turned into a nightmare for students resting in their rooms.

An Ordinary Hostel Became Ground Zero

The BJ Medical College hostel had never seen anything like this. Built decades ago to house budding doctors, it is now etched in memory for something no one expected. Part of the plane, including a wheel, crashed onto its roof. Some sources says, some students are injured too. The wreckage covered parts of the building, making it unsafe and terrifying for the young students inside.

Government and Emergency Response

The Gujarat government moved swiftly. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel ordered emergency rescue teams to the site. A green corridor was arranged to move the injured quickly to nearby hospitals. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also rushed to Ahmedabad. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) began operations soon after. Families were given hotline numbers for information, and emergency centres were set up to help coordinate efforts during the chaos.

Global Shock and International Reaction

This plane wasn’t just carrying Indians—it had passengers from the UK, Portugal, and Canada. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer was informed immediately. His message of sympathy reached many in both countries. Indian leaders including PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi expressed their sadness. Civil aviation officials shared that the plane was a Boeing 787-8, and that a detailed inquiry would follow. Till then, all flights from Ahmedabad airport were suspended.

Memories, Smoke and Silence Remain

BJ Medical College is known for producing some of India’s best doctors. No one ever imagined their hostel would turn into a crash site. The young students who once worked late nights treating patients were now being treated for trauma themselves. For the people of Ahmedabad, especially in the Meghani Nagar area, this tragedy will be remembered not just for the lives lost, but for the lives forever changed in a single moment.
