Ajay Kumar, former defence secretary appointed as the UPSC Chairman

New Delhi (India) May 14: Ajay Kumar has been appointed as the new chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). He is a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and former defense secretary.

The President of India officially announced the appointment under Article 316(1) of the Constitution of India. Preeti Sudan left the role on April 29, 2025, and was replaced by Ajay Kumar. The position had been occupied since July 2024 by former health secretary Preeti Sudan.

From August 2019 to October 2022, Kumar, an IAS officer from Kerala, was the defense secretary. In addition, he has held other important positions, such as Secretary of the Department of Defense Production. The Ministry of Defense's longest-serving secretary was Kumar. Aadhaar, Jeevan Pramaan, MyGov.in, and the Government e-Marketplace are just a few of the Digital India projects in which he was instrumental.

Tenure, Terms And Academic Credentials

According to the rules under Article 316(2) of the Constitution, his term will last for six years or until he turns 65. His chairmanship of UPSC will start as soon as he takes office. Kumar, who also has a master's degree in development economics and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from IIT Kanpur, holds a PhD in business administration from the University of Minnesota.
