An Earthquake of 4.4 rattles Haryana; strong tremors felt in Delhi NCR region
A powerful earthquake in Delhi NCR shocked the residents on Thursday morning. It began around 9:04 a.m. and lasted for a short while.

New Delhi (India) July 10: On Thursday morning, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced strong earthquake tremors. The earthquake in Delhi NCR started at 9.04 am and continued for a little while.
The National Centre for Seismology reports that around 9.04 am, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 struck Jhajjar, Haryana. It is a part of the National Capital Region.
The National Center for Seismology posted, “EQ of M: 4.4, On: 10/07/2025 09:04:50 IST, Lat: 28.63 N, Long: 76.68 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Jhajjar, Haryana,” on social media platform X.
In the NCR, tremors rocked Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad. It also affected Sonipat, Rohtak and Hisar in Haryana.
About 200 kilometres from the epicentre in Jhajjar, tremors were also reported in Meerut and Shamli in western Uttar Pradesh.
Residents rushed outside as the earthquake shook the buildings. There was no damage or injuries reported at the time.
Is Delhi sensitive to tremors?
In Delhi, earthquakes are frequently seen. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) claims that the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge is a "major geological structure." It may be connected to the seismicity, or frequency of earthquakes in the Delhi area.
India has been split into a number of zones, each of which represents how frequently earthquakes occur in a specific area. According to the DDMA, Delhi is situated in Zone IV, which has "fairly high seismicity."
Delhi is therefore considered a "high-risk area" for earthquakes. Delhi typically experiences earthquakes with a magnitude of 5 to 6. But in Delhi, an earthquake of a magnitude of 7-8 happens "occasionally.”
According to data from the US Geological Survey, Delhi has not had an earthquake with a magnitude greater than five in the previous ten years.
Previous Earthquakes
There have been multiple magnitude 4 earthquakes in the Delhi-NCR area in recent years. A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck Delhi's adjacent state of Haryana in 2022. It was a shallow earthquake. The state did not sustain significant damage.
NDRF Advisory
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) issued an advisory as soon as the earthquake occurred. It advised everyone to run outside and use the stairs while avoiding panic. For individuals who are driving when the earthquake occurs, the NDRF also offered this advice: stop in an open area.
People posted images of the earthquake tremors from their areas or homes on X. The earthquake occurred after a heavy downpour that caused waterlogging and traffic jams in the Delhi-NCR on Wednesday.
